what is involved with starting a tanning salon?
Posted by Sonni in: buy a tanning salonI am looking to start a tanning salon and was wondering if anybody out there already owns one or manages one, and was wondering what are good vendors to buy from (ie for beds, lotions, accessories) thank you.
Starting a Tanning Salon is like starting any other business, you need a business plan. I would recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. I’d call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.
The counselor at SCORE will most likely help you write a business plan and force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a tanning salon and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you’ll concentrate on (your market ) and how you’ll go after them.
You’ll need to register the business with your state controller’s office and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan.

Tanning Salon Gold

We started a tanning salon two years ago and just shut our doors… we were jsut getting ready to break even this year and potentially start making money next year when my wife got pregnant again. Hooray, but can’t have two kids AND a salon AND a full time job. That said, here’s what we’ve found out:
Make sure you have enough money on hand to pay for ALL expenses your first year without ANY income. That way, you’re just making buck and setting yourself up to succeed. (This is normal business prudence that we learned the hard way… it is NOT an instant money maker, but you can succeed at it.) DO NOT COUNT ON YOUR FIRST-YEAR PROFITS.
Second, do NOT lease equipment. Beds lose value VERY fast, and it is to your advantage to buy used ones rather than owe thousands on beds that are not worth what remains in their value… call around to the local salons and see who’s selling. (If you’re in Kansas, you might give me a holler… I’m selling! grin) Alternatively, if you MUST have new beds, buy them on a low-interest rate credit card or with a bank loan (hard to get for salons because the beds lose value so quickly).
Third, we use Four Seasons for our supplier. We love them and they treat us right. Others sometimes don’t. Wehn you negotiate your initial discount, know that you can get decent percentages off, plus free shipping and free COD. That wouldn’t be a bad place to start. Once you’re established, you can negotiate even more off… That’s percentage off of the salon price, not the retail. I won’t say more publicly so people don’t get hacked at me, but you can e-mail me for more specifics.
Fourth, seriously… DON’T LEASE EQUIPMENT.
Fifth, get anything and everything in writing from any business associate. It’s not rude. It’s business.
Anything else, feel free to ask! Have a great day and God bless.
