I had Hawaiian Tropic and she made me purchase a lotion from Hollywood Tans. Did she just want to sell me the lotion or is there actually a good reason why I couldn’t use the tanning oil I bought at the drug store?

they tell you not to use that stuff if you’re using a bed or stand up. plus, it’s oil which can be messier than lotions.

Sounds like she just wanted you to buy th elotion from her… sorry! Unless you had a tan accelerant that was meant for outdoors – then it wouldn’t help you in the booth.

u can`t use regular mass-market lotions/oils in the lie-down beds, because ingredients used in them damage the acrylic…but i`m not sure why she wouldn`t let u use it in the stand-up booth…it is a fact that lotions formulated for tanning bed use are more beneficial & provide better results for indoor tanning, but that wouldn`t explain why she kept u from using it…perhaps she was afraid the oil would leave a residue inside the cubicle or something, & she didn`t want to have to clean it later!!!

well there is indoor tanning oil and outdoor. I think that the difference between the two are the way they protect you skin. indoor is unnatural sun and outdoor is natural.

Outdoor lotions contain mineral oil as a main ingredient. That mineral oil is there to keep the lotion on your skin while you are swimming or engaged in an activity that could cause you to sweat. That same ingredient adheres to the acrylic on tanning beds and to the floors of stand-up units. The SANITIZER we use to clean and sanitize the beds between use is not designed to remove or break that oil down. If the sanitizer were designed stronger it would be too strong for the acrylic and discolor it. Once discolored, the acrylic will no longer let enough UVB rays through to properly tan you.

We have even had to replace some acrylics (at $800 each) because customers have “sneaked”outdoor lotion into the tanning bed. At $5-$10 per session, we cannot afford to be replacing acrylics.

    Hope this helps.

I work at HT and the reason we don’t want people to use oils or sprays in your booths is because if the products get on the bulbs, it hardens and turns into a glue. It is almost impossible to get it off the bulbs and the booth walls once it drys on them. Even if you keep the door closed the spray gets everywhere, especially the oil. You may not see it right away but I assure you we do once we get in there to clean it. In my salon we tell customers if it is an absolute must for them to use spray or oils then to do it in the bathroom before getting into the booth.
With oils especially it is very difficult to clean up the floor when oil has gotten on it. Unless we take the booth apart and scrub the floors everytime someone uses an oil it will remain slippery which is a hazard for the next customer(s).
